What is Broken Link?
Broken link is a web-page that can’t be found or accessed by a user, for various reasons. Web servers will often return an error message when a user tries to access a broken link. Broken links are also often known as “dead links” or “link rots”. Broken Link Building (also known as Dead Link Building) is the practice of building backlinks by replacing links of 404 pages with a working link to a target website.
Examples of Broken Link Codes and Their Meanings
404 Page not found – non-existing page on the server.
400 Bad request – the URL found on a page was not understood by the host server. Timeout – HTTP requests constantly timed out.
Reset – the host server is either too busy or misconfigured, that’s why it drops the connections.
Empty – no content and no response code found; host server replies with an “empty” message.
Bad Code – Invalid HTTP response code.
Bad Host – the host name may be invalid, non-existing, or unreachable. Related ArticlesWhy are Broken Links important for SEO?How to Find and Fix Broken Links with SEOAnt?
Why are Broken Links important for SEO?
Having broken links in your website would not directly affect your SEO ranking on Google. It will not impact your overall SEO, but it can lead to the impression that your website is either forgotten or abandoned. On the positive side, Google also uses broken links to check a website's quality. Fixing broken links in your website would be better than losing your rank every time.
Since SEO's main goal is to provide users with a better experience using your website, avoiding too many broken links is also necessary. Dead links affect the engine algorithms, and users would have a wrong impression of your website. If users cannot use your website correctly due to many broken links, they will start losing interest.
